Choosing a Contractor

Finding the RIGHT contractor for your project entails much more than just finding the lowest price. Here are a couple of tips on finding the right contractor for your home improvement project:
    Remodelor's Council
  • Take your time — Be sure to interview more that one contractor, and evaluate each.
  • Ask for insurance certificates — verifying that the contractor has workers' compensation and adequate liability insurance.
  • Ask for references — Find out about the contractor's capabilities and quality of workmanship.
  • Conduct Inspections — See for yourself the quality of work and design capabilities.
  • Permanency — make sure the contractor has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.
  • Contract — A contract protects both parties. Incorporate any warranties, guarantees, or other promises in your contract. Always insist on written change orders. Include the starting and completion dates. Remember, some delays are unavoidable and beyond the contractor's control.
  • Be Cautious — Be wary of an unusually low bid or low advertised price. If a contractor cannot pay for labor, materials and overhead, you are both in trouble.
  • Comfort — After narrowing down your choice based on the above criteria, choose someone that makes you feel comfortable. Be certain they have a good understanding of your tastes and needs.
